Oil Pulling…or nah?

I’m sure many of us has heard all the hype on ‘oil pulling’…but how many of you have actually tried it and what are your thoughts?

The first question…what is oil pulling?
Answer: Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth
on an empty stomach for 20 minutes, this is meant to draw out the toxins in your body to improve your overall health.

What type of oil should I use?
Answer: 1 tablespoon of oil – typically coconut, sesame, or sunflower oil …the most popular one is organic coconut oil ( it also has added benefits and can prevent tooth decay )

20 minutes is a long time, what happens if I can’t last 20 minutes?
Answer: Start off with 5 minutes a day and slowly increase your time…20 minutes is a long time, and regardless of how long, or little time you are doing this, you will still have some benefits.
Just remember, the longer you pull, the more bacteria you will draw out…and there is no need to swish it the way you would with your mouthwash ( you don’t want your jaw to start aching ) gently sucking the oil through your teeth is all that’s required.

How often should I do this?
Answer: I read that you should do this everyday for 2 weeks and then follow up with twice a week

Tips*
*Do not spit this out in the sink, it may clog your pipes – just use a trash can
*Proceed with brushing your teeth after the process and you’ll notice there is no ‘oily’ residue
*Do NOT swallow the oil…you’ll be swallowing all of the bacteria that you’re trying to get rid of
*You can also add a drop of essential oil to add a little flavor

After reading up of this, I decided it was time I broke out my coconut oil tried it out. The first day I did my oil pulling; I could only keep it in my mouth for 5 minutes. It was starting to feel really full in my mouth and I was scared I would end up swallowing some on accident…so instead of risking it; I just spit it out. The texture was weird…not weird bad, not weird good- just weird. The taste was an oily coconut aroma, in my mouth ( I’m sorry, I’m so terrible at explaining things…but I’m working on it ). After I brushed my teeth, there was no residue and my mouth felt clean.
The second day I kept the oil in my mouth for 7 minutes ( not too much of a time difference, but it was a slight improvement )
Tomorrow will be my third day, and I’ll keep you posted ^_^

The oil that I use is from Trader Joe’s and it was only $5.99
